Census of Ireland 1911. At the time of this census, Thomas' occupation was given as "Railway Inspector" and the family had 1 servant and 1 boarder.

At some later stage he became assistant manager of the Sligo and Leitrim Railway company and then, later, Mayor of Enniskillen.

The following bullet points summarise two obituaries from local newspapers on August 11, 1960:

  • Was a native of Blacklion, County Cavan.
  • Came to Enniskillen on the staff of the now defunct Sligo, Leitrim and Northern Counties Railway.
  • Elected as member of the Urban council in 1923.
  • Became an Alderman when borough status was restored to Enniskillen in 1949.
  • Served for over 30 years on the Urban and Borough Councils of Enniskillen.
  • Prior to his election as Mayor in 1955, had served for 10 years as vice-chairman and Deputy Mayor.
  • Was Mayor of the Borough when King Leopold of Belgium received the freedom of Enniskillen on behalf of the Dragoon Guards of which he was Colonel-in-Chief (see video).
  • Illness compelled him to retire as Mayor in 1957 but he remained as a member of the Council for some time afterwards.
  • Was father of:
    • Mr Arthur Algeo, former president of the Ulster Farmer's Union;
    • Mrs R. A. Herbert, wife of the Enniskillen town solicitor;
    • Miss Louie Algeo, Enniskillen, of the Ulster Transport Authority;
    • Misses Dorothy and Eadie Algeo, of the Inland Revenue Department, County Derry.
  • Died at home, Fortlea, Enniskillen aged 89 years old.
  • Buried in Rossory Church graveyard. As well as his children (see above), chief mourners included Mr R. A. Herbert (solicitor and his son-in-law).
  • Algeo Drive, one of the new roads in Derrychara, was named after him.
  • Was a strong Unionist in politics and a "rugged but fair" debater.
  • Notable for his sense of caution and economy in the Council's financial affairs.
  • Was a faithful worshipper who believed in the Christian way of life.
  • Hobbies: fishing and shooting (also rowing, not mentioned in the obituaries but see below).

There's an undated copy of a Sligo newspaper article recounting a banquet and presentation in honour of Thomas Algeo when he transferred from Sligo to head office (of the Sligo, Leitrim and Norther Counties Railway) in Enniskillen. Here's a summary:

  • Had a "progressive railway career, climbing the ladder of success step by step with marked ability".
  • Entered the railway service as a goods checker.
  • Promoted to foreman at the Enniskillen Goods Station.
  • Next step was station master at Forencecourt.
  • Subsequently transferred to Dromahair.
  • Then promoted to Traffic Inspector.
  • His wife is the daughter of another highly respected railwayman, Mr Stockdale, stationmaster at Manorhamilton.
  • Very active in Masonic circles and a member of the Constitutional Club and other societies.
  • A prominent oarsman in "old-time boating circles".

Some say that, due to his staunch Unionism, he broke off relations with his daughter, Molly, and never spoke to her again after she married a Catholic. However, both Molly and her husband are reported to have attended his funeral.

Thomas Algeo can be seen in his role as Mayor at age 85 in a video of King Leopold of Belgium visiting the 5th Dragoon in Enniskillen in 1956.
