Excellent portrait of a really annoying and despicable man (called Everard) apparently based on von Arnim‘s short marriage to Frank Russell (brother of the famous philosopher Bertrand). The only trouble is that he never gets his comeuppance. Mark was really looking forward to this part the whole time he was reading the book and was most disappointed to get to the end and discover there was none.

Everard was soo bad he reminded Mark of the teacher who Kath went for a date with in After Life, series 3, episode 4. Remember how he was memorably described?
